As Lo-Fi Hip-Hop rose in popularity in recent years, it seems for many people the word lo-fi is synonymous with the genre. There’s nothing wrong with this but lo-fi is actually more of an aesthetic and a certain character of the sounds that are used in a track.

Nowadays DAWs sound very clean with excellent audio quality. But it seems many people prefer the sounds from yesteryear, when analog equipment was adding hiss and harmonics (distortion) to the sound and digital gear was still using lower bit depths and sample rates and degraded the audio.

In Maschine there are plenty of ways to achieve those dirty sounds and add character to your samples and instruments. One of the coolest ways is to switch the built-in sampler to the SP1200 or MPC60 engine and pitching the sample up or down enhances this effect.

I hope you enjoy these sound design tricks. They don’t require any additional gear or plugins and only use Maschine’s stock sounds and effects
